This isn't just a nostalgia trip; it’s a brilliant evolution of a classic. Gameloft did an incredible job updating the visuals to a sort of 'HD-2D' style that looks gorgeous on high-res screens. What I appreciated most, however, was the care taken to represent Native American history accurately—it adds a depth that the original games lacked.
The gameplay is brutal in the best way. You will still die of dysentery, and you will still lose half your supplies in a river, but the new RPG elements give you more agency over your fate. The inclusion of 'journeys' beyond just the main trail keeps things fresh, and the weekly challenges provide a reason to keep coming back. It’s a masterclass in how to reboot a franchise for a modern audience while staying true to its roots.
Dinsun here. I grew up playing the original on a green-screen Apple II in a computer lab, so I was ready to be disappointed. I wasn't. Gameloft has done something rare here: they’ve made a remake that actually improves upon the memory of the original. The survival mechanics are much more engaging now—balancing your party's morale and hygiene adds layers that the '90s versions lacked. The visuals are the real star, though; it’s genuinely beautiful.
I also appreciate the effort to move away from the 'manifest destiny' tropes. The game is more honest about the era, and it’s a better 'educational' tool because of it. It’s still punishing—you will still die of dysentery—but it feels less like a random dice roll and more like a consequence of your management choices. It’s perhaps a bit too guided for my tastes in the early game, but it’s the best survival sim on the platform right now. A very respectful and high-quality piece of work.
Performance: Stable, though it can drain battery quickly due to high-end lighting effects.
Buy if: You enjoy survival management and historical settings, or have nostalgia for the original.
Skip if: You hate losing progress due to random events or difficult survival systems.
Available on: Mac, Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, iPod
Version 2.1.1Fri Jan 12 2024
Various game performance improvements, optimizations and bug fixes.
Gameloft's reimagining of The Oregon Trail brings the classic educational survival game into the modern era with beautiful pixel art, expanded mechanics, and a more inclusive approach to history. Players must assemble a party, stock their wagon, and travel from Independence, Missouri, to the Oregon Territory. Along the way, they will face disease, broken axles, and treacherous river crossings. This version introduces new character classes, RPG-style perks, and mini-games for hunting, fishing, and rafting, all while maintaining the high-stakes survival loop that made the original a cultural phenomenon.
